Dr Deborah Cheung has been a specialist breast consultant surgeon since 2002, providing the best possible outcomes in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of breast diseases and breast cancer.


Having had friends and close relatives go through the breast cancer journey, Dr Cheung has a thorough understanding of what women go through as individuals in dealing with both benign breast conditions and breast cancer. She feels extremely privileged to be involved in helping thousands of women heal and achieve the best possible outcome in breast reconstruction and breast cancer surgery.

Dr Cheung is a strong proponent of immediate breast reconstruction and understands that mitigating the physical impact of breast cancer surgery has an immense positive effect on how a person copes with their cancer treatment. Dr Cheung is instrumental in promoting breast health and fighting for better access to breast cancer care for women in Western Sydney.

Education & Experience

Dr Cheung graduated from the University of Sydney in 1993 and obtained her surgical fellowship in 2001.

She is the Head of Breast and Endocrine Surgery at the Nepean Hospital, Senior Clinical Lecturer of University of Sydney, and Clinical Lecturer at Macquarie University Hospital.

She is also a visiting surgeon at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute and BreastScreen NSW.

Throughout the years, she has visited and worked in world renowned surgical and research units, mentored by world-class breast surgeons and plastic reconstructive surgeons at:

  • Harvard Medical School (Brigham Womens’ Hospital, Boston)
  • London (Raven Institute)
  • Milan (European Institute of Oncology)
  • UCLA

She is one of the few breast surgeons in Australia who has years of experience in oncoplastic operation, breast reduction and breast lift surgery, immediate breast reconstruction and breast symmetry surgery. She presented one of the first series of nipple sparing mastectomies in Australia, confirming its safety in breast cancer treatment. She also pointed out the superior cosmetic and psychological results for breast cancer patients.

She works intimately with her Multidisciplinary team of specialist reconstructive surgeons, oncologists, breast radiologists, breast care nurses, lymphoedema specialists and research scientists.

Ongoing Research

Dr Cheung has a special interest in breast cancer survivorship. She is also continuing to research breast cancer prevention, aesthetic results in breast surgery, and the psychosocial effects of breast cancer treatment.
